Micky Delahunty
Micky Delahunty MNZM is a significant figure in Aotearoa theatre and a prolific playwright, whose work has contributed to the development new artists and contemporary writing. With strong ties to Downstage Theatre and The Hannah Playhouse from their early career as an actor, Delahunty was part of a generation shaping both the form and content of New Zealand theatre during a period of bold exploration.
As a playwright, Delahunty is known for crafting works that reflect New Zealand life with honesty, humour, and sharp observation. Their plays were developed and performed within the professional theatre networks including Downstage and The Hannah, contributing to a growing canon of homegrown work at a time when local stories were gaining momentum on major stages. One of their most celebrated works 2b or nt 2b premiered in Halfway Up at The Hannah before upscaling to the main auditorium and then Circa Theatre. This play returned as a new production to Halfway Up for NZ Fringe 2026.
In 1987, Delahunty won the prestigious Bruce Mason Playwriting Award. In the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honours, they were appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to theatre.
As Education Officer at Downstage 1987–91, Delahunty’s dedication to supporting young people was solidified. Their legacy is one of storytelling that is unmistakably for the next generation, evident by the number of young people across New Zealand who have had started their careers through the mentorship of Micky Delahunty’s theatre work and education.
