Ken Blackburn

Ken Blackburn is regarded as one of Aotearoa’s most enduring and beloved stage and screen actors, whose connection to The Hannah Playhouse stretches back to the early years of professional theatre in Wellington. Before The Hannah opened its doors, Ken was already a core part of the Downstage Theatre community, helping to shape the creative energy that would soon find a permanent home in the purpose-built playhouse on Cambridge Terrace.

Ken was one of many actors to appear on The Hannah Playhouse stage in Downstage’s 1973 opening night production of As You Like It. In 1978, Ken played Voltaire/Host in Candide, with the wit, warmth, and musical dexterity that became hallmarks of his craft. His contribution reflects an era when Downstage was boldly expanding the possibilities of New Zealand theatre; experimenting, entertaining, and elevating local performance craft.

Across a career spanning more than five decades, Blackburn has moved effortlessly between stage, television, film, and radio, becoming a familiar face in productions such as Gliding On while continuing to champion live performance. His Equity Lifetime Achievement Award (2017) recognises not only a remarkable body of work, but the generosity, professionalism, and artistic curiosity that have defined his career.

Ken Blackburn’s relationship with The Hannah is another which is part of our living history. His son Stephen Blackburn (Manager, City Events at Wellington City Council), has early memories of hanging around with Dad at The Hannah, and has been instrumental in getting The Hannah open again, including solidifying the partnership between The Hannah Playhouse Trust and Wellington City Council.
