Theatre and the art of sustainable touring

“Ralph McCubbin Howell and Hannah Smith, are the creative powerhouses behind Wellington’s Trick of the Light Theatre.

OPINION: We run an independent theatre company. For over a decade we’ve been making and touring shows around Aotearoa and the world. To run a viable business we need to tour our work. But right now the world is on fire, and touring has a footprint. It’s a problem.

A few years into the business we found ourselves wondering why we weren’t bringing the same priorities to our work that we brought to our home life. We’d made plays that were environmental in their content, but there wasn’t a green kaupapa that we brought to our work as a whole.”

The Hannah was proud to show Suitcase Show as part of the 2025 Fringe Festival season and are avid supporters of Trick of the Light Theatre. It is always a pleasure to read articles about the theatre makers who have shown or developed at The Hannah and a teeny shame that the rest of the article is behind a paywall… but we understand.
